Stacey Whitacre and Carolyn Rock Present at SHA

The 51st Annual Society for Historical Archaeology Conference was held in a very chilly New Orleans from January 3-6, 2018. Archaeologists from Brockington's Atlanta and Savannah offices presented the results of recent work. Carolyn Rock discussed slaves as individuals, focusing on variations in status and identity among field slaves at a large, Coastal Plain Plantation. Stacey Whitacre spoke about the role of systematic metal detection in Phase III investigations of historic sites. Both Rock and Whitacre based their papers on Brockington’s Phase III Data Recovery at Colonels Island Plantation in Glynn County, Georgia, which dates from the mid to late-nineteenth century. Both papers were well received and inspired several thought-provoking questions and discussions regarding future work at historic sites.
